The challenge of memory card storage devices

More and more storage available, and users are wondering whether to upgrade.

The main challenges - preservation, recordkeeping requirements, access and disposal.

Who would have thought?

Schot rightly flags the biggest danger as "too much" data all in one place and the need to back it up.

This is a great point and probably one storage area often overlooked by the average happy-snapper, as part of their routine backup procedure.

He goes on to discuss the issues arising from "quality vs quantity".

Firstly he considers it a disadvantage that we can create masses of digital photographs so easily - without any major costs to encourage photographers to take time and care, technically and creatively. For example, what would make the best shot in this circumstance/environment; for what purpose might I use this photograph?

Secondly he describes the challenges of sorting through all that volume, looking for good photos amongst a lot of trash or duplication.  It's difficult to find what you're looking for; perhaps difficult to choose the "best" photo for a particular purpose. Photographers and publishers may give up and settle for less than optimal images.

Drawing himself back from this digression into "photo theory", he urges photographers to consider the creative consequence of technology before leaping aboard the next-big-thing that comes along.
