  • Hi Sonya,  I am trying to embrase the technology and can see that NING has many useful features.  I have discovered the 'follow' application and get alterts when someone posts on the subjects I have indicated an interest in.  If I don't indicate 'follow', I don't think any alterts come automatically when someone posts to the Forum or Blog, so this requires me to go in and check on any new discussions regularly.

Personally I still like the list where information comes to me.  I have my email on all day and hear the indicator when a new message comes in.  Tim Robinson and Anne Picot have started a google list, which you have probably seen a notice about.  I think many will appreciate this, particularly those who belong to organisations who don't allow staff to use social networking sites eg Commonwealth Bank, City of  Sydney Counci, and the National Archives, although I have noticed that some in the NAA have joined, so not quite sure what's happening there.

I think the real issue is about change management.  NING was just launched with no explanation and no discussion. I am concerned that there are so many who can't access it and while Pat says she will talk to CAARA about the situation, two of the three institutions I know who disallow access are not CAARA members.

The list was one of the most useful and well used services that Council provided for members with its abondoment proving very devisive.  It pains me significantly to see the fracture lines that have appeared over this, which some good communications might have avoided.

Hope you have a nice Christmas.

    Colleen

  • Hi, If someone posts directly to me or if someone answers a posting I have made on the Forum I get a notice, but if someone posts a new message on the Forum ie to everyone, I don't get a message. Is that right? As a non intuitive baby boom I'm still learning.
  • Hi Sonya, not too sure about the site, but am reserving my opinion. What I don't like is the lack of immediacy that email provides and the fact that I have to go into the site to check what's happening. If you really need to get a message out putting it on NING won't ensure that members will see it in a certain timeframe. If they haven't checked NING then they miss out. I'm not sure why we can't have a list and NING.
  • Hello from your friend Shirley in Canberra.
  • Hi Sonya, nice to have you as a friend. Interested to see how the site develops.
