Update on the ISO 15489 review

Colleagues

Two weeks ago the ISO Working Group responsible for the review of ISO 15489 (WG13) met in Beijing. Following the positive vote for the revised standard earlier this year, there were still a number of comments from members requiring resolution and some members of the group were keen to see one final draft prior to publication. This means that we are not likely to see the final version of the revised 15489 Part 1 coming out until 2016.

Some decisions were also made regarding replacing the existing Part 2. Various options were canvassed, with the end result being the formation of two teams to work on advice on appraisal and its applications (Project lead: Wout van der Reijden, The Netherlands), and the development and implementation of systems for records (Project lead: Gemma Lee, Korea). The intention, in particular for the systems advice, is to provide lots of examples reflecting the opportunities and constraints of different implementation environments. The groups are due to share outlines with the main Editorial Group by later this year. Other advice on developing and implementing records controls (disposal authorities, access rules, metadata schema etc) will either be addressed via existing standards and technical reports or created as new projects. The working group is looking at developing an interactive graphic that shows the resources that are available or pending and their relationships.

We are also working on a communications strategy so that the profession will be informed about the new standard as its publication gets closer.

Best wishes

Project Lead
