Spydus10 Cultural Collections?

Dear colleagues,

Does anyone have experience in using Spydus10 Cultural Collections software?

The Stonnington History Centre is exploring a possible move to the Spydus software. Civica's show piece is the Wairarapa Archive at the Masterton District Library in New Zealand but I'd like to talk to an Australian collection that uses it. We are a large council/community archive and local history collection. We need software that can deal well with large archival runs as well as big collections of architectural drawings and photographs. You can find out more about us here -http://www.stonnington.vic.gov.au/Discover/History

Thanks,

Janet Buick - Local History Librarian

  • Hi Emma

we are still using DBTextworks and I haven't done anything about AtoM as we are in the process of moving to new premises.  I will probably follow it up after Easter as I don't want to renew my subscription to DBTextworks

  • Hi Janet

And greetings from New Zealand. As you say in your question, we use this programme and we are huge fans.  We have a collection that mirrors exactly what you are describing - we look after the archival records for the District Council, have a very active community archive, and also manage a local history collection, along with oral histories as well.  It has the added advantage (for us) of being able to be integrated with the library's catalogue.  If you want to discuss anything with me I am happy to help in any way I can.  my email is garethwATlibrary.mstn.govt.nz.

    • Hi Gareth, an email will be winging its way to you shortly. Much appreciated.

  • Hi Janet

at the last ASA conference Maggie Shapley ANU University Archivist gave a session on their free software called ICA-AtoM

    https://www.ica-atom.org/

I spoke to her about it and there was a suggestion that she would run some training sessions  through ASA in 2016.

I am planning to follow this up next year.  If the software is big enough for ANU's Archives, it is certainly big enough for my Anglican Diocesan Archives. And it's free!

(Sorry Maggie for dropping you in the middle of this discussion!)

    Cheers

    • Hi Hazel and Janet,

I am currently researching a database to implement at a small archive in Melbourne.

Did either of you choose atom as your database and if so, how have you found digital uploading?

If not, which program did you end up choosing?

      Cheers,

      Emma

    • Hi Emma,

we are still at the evaluation stage. I did have a look at AtoM but ended up feeling that it wasn't flexible enough for our needs. I'm intending to have a close look and play with Spydus Cultural Collections in March/April - we are frantically busy curating an exhibition that will run all February. I'd be interested to hear you opinions on AtoM if you investigate it further.

      cheers,

      Janet

    • Thanks Hazel, much appreciated. I'll check out ANU Archives.

      cheers,

      Janet

  • Hi Janet,

I've looked at this too as our school uses the Library software and has been very happy with it.

    • Thanks Brigid, what were your thoughts on the software? Do you know of any Australian archives that are using Spydus?

      best wishes,

      Janet
