Uniform collecting

Hi, there is no formal procedure for acquiring uniforms at MFAC's archive. They just get delivered to me when the uniform shop gets something interesting. They have given me a lot of examples of the original uniform that they had kept. It hasn't changed much so there has been no need. But I would like to set up a formalised "donation" system with the uniform shop. This way when they do change anything I will be notified and they will set aside a set for me. I also need this so I can go and fill some gaps I have. As this has cost implications I wanted to check what the usual procedure was in other schools for these internal donations. Does the cost get charged to the archives budget or are they gifted to you by the school?

  • Our diligent Uniform Shop Manager has always ensured Archives receives any new items (at no cost). Her recent retirement and your message are a reminder that I need to ensure this policy is maintained!

  • Good second-hand items are cheap (if not free) but I do purchase each Year 12's jacket with Class of ... names from my Archives budget.

  • The archives at Wenona contains a lot of uniform from pieces of the over 100 items boarders were expected to have in the 1950s to pieces which reflect the changing uniforms since the 1960s. The ever changing sports uniforms are the biggest headache! Uniforms come to Archives in two ways - direct donation by a school leaver or from the Clothing Pool as items become obsolete. As the latter cannot be sold, Archives gets them for free.Michele Ginswick

  • I get the uniforms from unclaimed lost property at no cost. End of term is a great time. At the times when I have got something from the clothing shop, if it is new then I pay for it out of archive's budget, but if is used, then they have donated it.

  • I've purchased new items at cost price and some excellent second hand items in good condition, with a cost reflective of their condition. Some t-shirts and tops no longer sold, were gifted to the Archives. Judith Gibson, Caulfield Grammar School

  • Our Uniform Shop gifts items to Archives. As with you, the uniform has changed very little in 36 years.
