Storing artwork (framed)

Hi all, We have alot of framed works of various sizes and I'm just seeking suggestions for artwork storage - what do you use at your school? I have found a great unit to purchase but it is quite expensive (see image below) so I thought before I do, I would look for alternatives. Any ideas appreciated,Becca

Threefold the stride of Time

This morning I was reading the Early History of Mount Eliza on the Mornington Peninsula compiled by the Mt Eliza Progress Association, 1926 (Mt Eliza is where our school is located). I came across this reflection at the end of the book and thought it would be nice to share it with my fellow School Archivists ----Threefold the stride of Time, from first to last! Loitering slow, the Future creepeth — Arrow-swift, the Present sweepeth — And motionless forever stands the Past.Friedrich Schiller,…

ERDMS - Schools

Hi Everyone, I realise this topic has been discussed previously, I'm currently looking at software packages (cloud or onsite) for our school, we are currently using Archive Manager but looking to move away from this to a more central system. Looking at digitalisation governance documents so I would like a system where I can give access to key staff.  I would love to hear what other schools use. thanksMerilyn

  • Hello colleagues
I hope you are all very well.
Apologies I have meant to be more active in this space and have a great deal of information, tips, and tricks to share, which I will do asap.
For now, I wondered if I may enquire; are any college and school archivists working closely with your libraries and library staff to provide access to archival materials, and how are you doing this, please?
If you are using your Library Management System to provide access to archival collections, which systems are you using, please? Our School is looking at upgrading the LMS and I am hoping to monopolise/strategise on this preliminary work to also accommodate our AMS (at least in part) by using MARC fields to describe Archial collections. - I'd love to hear from anyone working in this space!
    Many kind regards

    • Hi Kate, this subject recently came up within one of our Committees, and the main contribution to the discussion was that using an LMS for Archives is a struggle. In the past I worked as a librarian for 7 years, and have now been a school archivist for 4 and a half years. In short, archival material has limited description and retrieval within a library system - but can be linked from an LMS to an archive server. I hope this is useful, kind regards, Ros Malone Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School
      • Hi Rosalind
Thank you very much for your reply - great to hear.
I worked at the State Library of SA for 15 years cataloguing archival material into the LMS. I believe SLSA is currently/still in the process of researching a suitable AMS for their Archival and Pictorial collections.
I guess it depends on the LMS in use. Perhaps if the LMS has enough capability, it can adequately express enough fields of description to suitably describe archival material (based on ISADG).
How have you linked LMS to your archive server? I'd be interested to know if you are happy with the user experience as librarian and also if the students like and can manage the interface, please?
We are looking at acquiring a new LMS and I would really love to be able to migrate our archival data to it, to manage it more adequately and to make Archives more accessible to our community.
Thank you very much for your time!

        With kind regards,
        Kate

  • Hello dear School Archivists,
I have been asked to put together a proposal for a Records Management System. Specifically an EDRMS for use for all records used and created by the College. Huge. Just wondering what other schools use? FileDirector is the top of the Principals list atm.
    Thanks in advance !
    Simone (Marcellin)
    • Hi Simone, wondering which EDRMS your school went with?
      Vicki (Shire Christian School)
  • Hi School Archivists

This question has probably been asked before but I have been tasked with investigating options for a collection management system. I am familiar with AtoM but was wondering what other archival collection databases other schools are using?

    Thanks
    Theresa (Star of the Sea)
    • Hi Theresa,
I've used the HDMS supplied free (!) from Uni Melb at several workplaces. Found it to be easy to use (MS Access).
      Catriona
      • Thanks Catriona! I'll check it out.
      • Welcome to your new position, Catriona! I have HDMS and love it, but I need to move away from MS Access. So hard to find a replacement!
        Brigid
    • Such a tricky question for many of us. I have an existing system I need to find a replacement for and have been searching for years for something that will match my existing data well and be good to use.
I have recently found out about "ArchivesSpace" which is another Open Source system, like AtoM. I'm not sure if smaller Archives are using it, but the State Library of Victoria, the National Library of Australia (in Canberra) and the Queensland State Archives are using it already.
