Dr Peter Tyler wrote the history of State Records NSW which was published earlier this year as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations. In this talk, Peter will describe his experiences researching and writing the history of the NSW state archives while embedded in State Records at Globe Street for eighteen months.  He will talk about the way the project developed as it progressed, and the types of records that were – or were not – used.  Most historians don’t have the opportunity to live within an organisation they are writing about. Sometimes it may be an advantage to observe dispassionately from outside, but on the other hand actually working with archivists in their natural habitat brought insights and information that may not have been revealed otherwise.  In addition to the obvious resources that are available, much can be learnt informally – not all of it publishable!

Christine Yeats is Manager of Public Access at SRNSW, and an ASA NSW Branch member. ‘As part of State Records’ 50th anniversary celebrations an intrepid team of archivists took up the challenge of developing a digital gallery to showcase 50 iconic items from the collection. With 67+ kilometres of records to choose from, the team was spoilt for choice. Before a start could be made some important decisions were needed. Who was the audience and how could an archives collection dating from 1787 until the present be best reflected though just 50 items?

This talk will discuss the process of developing the gallery – from selection to display. It will consider some of the lessons learned and share some our experiences over the past year.’
