Does anybody know of volunteering opportunities at a state-of-the-art archive in the Sydney area, where I can get solid practical archives skills (i.e. best practice) to complement my degree (archives major) and IT background so I can gain archives employment, preferably in the digital area ?
I'm running into the chicken-and-egg situation - I need archives experience to get a job, as entry-level positions appear to be nonexistant, but I need a job to get practical experience and exposure to software systems which are not available for home use or evaluation. I have volunteered for some time for a distinctly non-state-of-the-art archive and haven't been able to find better. Some organisations I have contacted made it clear they only want long-term commitments from volunteers, i.e. not people who are using them as a stepping-stone into employment, and I am morally opposed to being less than frank with them, i.e. telling them I will be with them forever.
