Hi Tas Branchers,

Our spring event this year will be a visit to the recently acquired Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery property of ‘Markree’ in Hobart.

Markree was built for the Baldwin family in 1926. The house is a fine example of early 20th century domestic architecture, it was designed by well-known Tasmanian architect Bernard Ridley Walker (1884–1957), whose work was inspired by the English Arts & Crafts movement.

In 2008 TMAG received a substantial bequest of property and money from Henry Graham Baldwin (1919–2007), the largest single bequest in the museum's history and one of the largest ever made to an Australian museum. The gift included over 4,200 items of fine and decorative arts, historical memorabilia, documents and ephemera. Henry also gifted his family home ‘Markree’.

We will be given a personal tour as well as talk explaining how archival records have informed the curators, including the period design of the property’s garden. After the tour we plan to have lunch at the Cargo Bar in Salamanca Square. Lunch will be open to family/friends if they too would like to join us.

Please RSVP for the tour and lunch by September 23 at the latest to david.bloomfield@education.tas.gov.au

Please Note: We can only have a maximum of 20 people for the tour, so first in best dressed
