NSW colleagues, particularly those interested in the link between local history collections, archives, historical societies and museums may be interested in Place, Space and Identity: New Directions for NSW Museums, Macquarie University 18-19 April. The symposium coincides with the development of a new strategic plan by Arts NSW for the visual arts and museum sectors.

Among more than 30 presenters in the symposium are Kylie Winkworth, who will argue that Australia has an unsustainable number of museums and collections. Chris Winter from the ABC’s Innovation Division will explore opportunities for increasing capacity and impact in the work of broadcasters and museums. And Professor David Throsby will outline how economics can contribute to decision-making in the cultural heritage field, and discuss some practical applications.

In our panel discussion on advocacy, Dr Gene Sherman AM, Andrew Simpson, Dr Dawn Casey, Katharine Brisbane AM, Gay Hendriksen and Liz Gillroy will discuss getting the pitch right. We will explore the details of the Australian Dress Register and the Connected Classrooms Program. There will be a demonstration Multi-touch technology for museums, galleries, learning and teaching, using Microsofts’ new Surface technology. And there will be a tour of Macquarie University museums and galleries.

To join the dialogue and opportunity for networking go to http://www.museumsaustralia.org.au/site/nswbranchconference.php. Early bird rates close 1 April. Bursaries to assist regional attendance are available. To apply for the bursaries please download the PDF on the website and return to Paul Bentley by 25 March.
