Jessica Furlong was appointed the Sydney Film Festival Archivist in 2021 as a part of the Living Archive upgrade project. The role is an exciting one, as Jess and her team work to develop and renew an already rich archive, utilising new technology to create innovative modes of viewing and access.

Jess has been working in the arts and cultural sector for over fifteen years both in NSW and internationally. She has predominately worked in arts administration, registration, and collection and archive management; however, she has often found herself working across a larger spectrum of roles including curatorial, arts education and research positions. Jess has a degree in History of Art from the University of Birmingham (UK) and a Master in Collection Management from the University of NSW. She is currently starting a PhD that seeks to explore solutions for the quickly diminishing storage availability for collecting organisations across NSW.

Prior to joining the Sydney Film Festival, Jess worked at the Sydney Opera House where she managed their art collection, which also included archival and heritage material. At the Sydney Opera House, Jess spearheaded the upgrade of the Sydney Opera House Collection through the development of new systems, including a collection management system, as well as all new collections policies and procedures. This project formed a part of the NSW Government’s Renewal Project, with a focus on retelling the story of the Sydney Opera House Collections. Similarly, the Sydney Film Festival’s Living Archive upgrade project involves the re-exploration and re-interpretation of a rich organisational history through the implementation of new and improved forms of collection management and archival access.
