Against notions of sharedness, what is the value of dispute in thinking about the cornerstones of archival theory and practice, such as custody, provenance and access? How does dispute help us think about repatriation and digital repatriation in claims over archives displaced from the contexts of their creation?

This talk will review the contributions to archival thought made by scholars, archivists and activists in the recent volume Disputed Archival Heritage and invite participants to think about the work that lies ahead for those working at the intersection of historical justice and material culture.

Presenter

The webinar will be presented by Dr James Lowry.

Dr James Lowry is the Chair and Director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, Queens College, City University of New York, where he is Ellen Libretto and Adam Conrad Endowed Chair in Information Studies. He is the founder and director of the Archival Technologies Lab (ATL) and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies, where he taught following a ten year career in archives and records management. James has written and researched extensively on displaced archives, and is convenor of Archival Discourses, the International Intellectual History of Archival Studies research network, and editor of the Routledge Studies in Archives book series.
