Day 2 Session 18a: 'The Noongarpedia project' by Prof. Len Collard, Prof. John Hartley, Gideon Digby, Dr Jan He Zhang. Recorded by Alan Milne in Astral 3, Crown Perth, Burswood WA, on Thursday 27 September 2018 as part of ASA 2018 'Archives in a Blade Runner Age- Identity & Memory, Evidence & Accountability' Introduced by Gionni Di Gravio, University Archivist at University of Newcastle (0:00- 2:34) ASA 2018 is the National Conference of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. (ASA) held in Perth, Australia 26-28 September 2018. Based on a collaboration between Wikimedia Australia and the University of Western Australia, the Noongarpedia project is an ARC funded project to add Noongar language to wikimedia projects. In the course of the project, participants have identified the need to digitize content in archives and libraries to make access to knowledge more accessible and to do this with the support of communities; but have identified that some knowledge isn't appropriate for the public domain. Balancing these tensions will be a focus of the presentation.
