Session 5B from Day 1 stream 2 'Community Collections and Remembrance' By Stuart Bennington. Stuart Bennington is a Curator, Official Records at the Australian War Memorial. The experiences of an Australian War Memorial Archivist deployed to the Middle East - The Australian War Memorial has been collecting the records of the Australian Defence Force on operations for over 100 years, with its precursor the Australian War Records Section commencing collecting the records and relics of the First World War. Changes in technology have caused huge disruption in the way in which archival records are created and managed. In addition, Defence units on deployment have to face these challenges in a unique and information-rich environment. Last year the Memorial sent Stuart Bennington, Curator Official Records, on deployment to the Middle East Region; this was the first time the Memorial had sent an archivist into the field in many years. He was sent to collect items and find out how the records of war are being generated in a modern conflict such as the war on ISIS. While there, he found himself considering how the Australian War Memorial fits into the picture of collecting on operations. In a setting where both the weapons and communication methods could have appeared in a Philip K Dick novel, find out how some of the old methods of the Australian War Records Section are just as applicable in the Blade Runner age. Recorded by Alan Milne in Astral 2, Crown Perth, Burswood WA, on Wednesday 26 September 2018 as part of ASA 2018 'Archives in a Blade Runner Age- Identity & Memory, Evidence & Accountability' ASA 2018 is the National Conference of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. (ASA) held in Perth, Australia 26-28 September 2018.
