'Session 15- More human than human: artificial intelligence in the archives' by Dr Gregory Rolan, Glen Humphries, Lisa Jeffrey and Tatiana Antsoupova (ASA 2018, Perth, Australia) Day 2 Session 'More human than human: artificial intelligence in the archives' by Dr Gregory Rolan, Monash University, Glen Humphries, State Records and Archives, NSW, Lisa Jeffrey, Public Records Office of Victoria and Tatiana Antsoupova, National Archives of Australia (ASA 2018, Perth, Australia) Not a day appears to go by without breaking news of some Artificial Intelligence (AI) advance or, at least, automation product that seemingly has the potential to transform our lives. As recordkeeping professionals, we can very well ask 'what about us' ? Where is the AI or automation that can help us with our classification, appraisal, and disposal work? If we are to meet the challenges of managing records in the digital age, such technological assists (together with the skills and knowledge required to wield them) will be necessary. What technologies are available to automate this digital recordkeeping and archive work? In this panel, moderated by Dr Gregory Rolan from Monash University, representatives from four Australian archival and government institutions that have embarked on Artificial Intelligence initiatives will discuss their projects: Glen Humphries from State Records & Archives NSW, Lisa Jeffrey from Public Record Office Victoria, Tatiana Antsoupova from National Archives Australia, and Wicka Simet from the Australian Government Department of Finance. We will attempt to provide a point-in-time snapshot of the practice of AI in recordkeeping; what is the reality versus the hype of such technology, and what is actually being done now?
