Here at the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada we have over 55 kilometres of archival records that can be an incredible resource to assist you in your family genealogical research. Archival research differs from library research as each archival record and collection is unique. This introductory video provides researchers with several tips and resources to help you prepare for researching your family history. In advance of your visit to the Provincial Archives of Alberta, researchers are encouraged to do some background research and gather as much information as you can by speaking with family members and reviewing records that you may already have access to in your family collections. Researchers are also encouraged to keep a log of these details noting names, dates, and locations. Do not filter anything out at this time. Vital statistics document birth, deaths, and marriages in the province of Alberta. These records are available at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and are a rich resource to aid you in your research. Researchers are encouraged to consider who would have created records about the person(s) or family you are researching including what their community involvements and affiliations may have been. Examples of this include community organizations, school, and church records. The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds the records of the United, Anglican, and Evangelical Lutheran Churches of Canada, as well as the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). Reference archivists at the Provincial Archives of Alberta are here to help you find what you need. If you are a family historian, consider how you will store and pass down your records and research to future generations.
