We're on track to move soon

Preparations for our move to the new National Archives Preservation Facility in Mitchell (artist's impression right) remain on track to begin on 30 October.

From this date access to some Canberra and Sydney records will cease to allow the relocation to begin in late November.

After 18 months of coordination, collaboration and hard work it is exciting to see the project move into its next phase.

The movement of records to the new building will be the largest of its kind in Australia. While we move records regularly, nothing on this scale has occurred in the last 30 years.

The new building will measure 17,000 square metres and house approximately 25 per cent of the collection. The environmentally friendly, energy-efficient building will provide a contemporary preservation and storage facility for the Archives. With storage for more than 100 shelf kilometres of paper records and nine kilometres of audiovisual records – as well as purpose-built workspaces for conservation and digitisation – it will enable continued preservation of important aspects of Australia’s heritage.

Between November 2016 and June 2017 we will be consolidating collections from three repositories. During this time, there will be some disruption to public access to records as we move and unpack the collections in their new home. We will endeavour to minimise any inconvenience throughout the relocation process. Throughout, you can access digitised records online, and records held in the Archives’ state offices that are unaffected by the move.
