War Memorial marches out new campaign

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra has launched a new print and TV campaign centred on a line from the national anthem ‘…for we are young and free’.

According to the Director of the Memorial, Brendan Nelson, the organisation is looking for new ways to engage Australians from a range of age groups and backgrounds as the country approaches the end of the centenary of the First World War.

Dr Nelson said the campaign would prompt Australians to remember and reflect on the stories of Australians at war.

“‘…for we are young and free’ is one of the most defining, wholly encapsulating lines in our national anthem,” Dr Nelson said.

Yet the paradox of life is that too often we tend to take for granted that which is most important to us”.

He said that to mark the nation’s freedom, Australians must continue to recognise and reflect on the 102,800 names on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour.

Bid to engage more people

“‘Reflecting’ on the sacrifice of our servicemen and servicewomen has been integrated into the creative execution of the campaign,” Dr Nelson said.

In both the print and TV ads, images from the Memorial’s archive are reflected back at visitors on the edge of the Pool of Reflection.”

He said the images embodied some of the 15 personal qualities of Australians at war, including ‘devotion’, ‘comradeship’ and ‘loyalty’ highlighted in the stain-glass windows in the Memorial’s Hall of Memory.

The images are of real Australian servicemen and servicewomen from different conflicts, and who have served with different arms of the Australian Defence Force,” he said.

Head of Communications and Marketing at the Memorial, Chris Wagner, said it was important to use some of the two million plus men and women who had served the nation, in the campaign.

In the same way that our ‘family’ are reflecting on the loyalty, devotion and comradeship of these real servicemen and servicewomen, we hope that others will visit our website, or the Memorial itself, and find their own personal connection,” Mr Wagner said.

We believe that everyone has a story to discover within the Memorial’s galleries, collection and archive.”

He said the campaign was being rolled out across multiple television networks with print advertising appearing in a variety of magazines and publications.
