Valuing information???

Good little quote from Prof McMillan about the value of information in the Canberra Times - if information is our only asset why do we have more governance and control around staff mobile phones when information assets created and mananged by staff are all over the place and out of control?.....

Yet Professor McMillan said there had been a tendency to regard such information as ‘‘an intangible side of government, and measuring it is an esoteric activity’’.
‘‘That view is swiftly changing. We now recognise that information is an asset of government and, indeed, it’s its only asset,’’ he said.
‘‘Many government agencies hire staff, rent premises and the only thing they own is their knowledge. ‘‘We have governance systems and cost-benefit analyses around property, finance and staff; it’s a surprise we don’t have it around information.’’
