Mali in west Africa has a rich written history… a story of religion and discovery told across tens of thousands of manuscripts dating from the 13th century.

Despite their fragility, they survived for centuries… until last year’s uprising by Islamist rebels threatened their future.

Amos Roberts returns to Timbuktu to see what happened to the priceless manuscripts he first filmed for Dateline in 2008.

He hears of the race against time to save them and hide them away from almost certain destruction, but did it succeed in preserving the stories of the past for future generations?
