Sound decisions made at Archives

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) in Canberra has announced the 10 recordings to be added to its Sounds of Australia registry in 2017.

According to the NFSA, the Sounds of Australia registry is the ultimate selection of culturally, historically and aesthetically significant sounds which have each made history and become part of Australia’s national identity.

It said that inclusion in the registry meant the recordings would live on at the NFSA for future generations to discover and enjoy.

Midnight Oil’s Power and the Passion, Christine Anu’s Island Home and The Wiggles’ Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car are three of the 10 recordings added this year.

Christine Anu said it was an honour to be selected  with a song so embedded in the Indigenous world of music that it went on to symbolise what ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ meant to every Australian.

To mark the occasion, The Wiggles recorded an acoustic version of their song. “We’ve been making music for children all around the world for 25 years now. It’s been lots of fun,” the group said.

Marking its 10th tenth year in 2016, Sounds of Australia was established by the NFSA to recognise the contribution of recorded sound to the nation’s evolving identity.

The 10 additions for 2017 are,  in chronological order:

1912 - When Father Papered the Parlour, by Billy Williams;

1937 - Life Without Love, by Frank Coughlan’s Trocadero Orchestra;

1968 - Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, by Eric Jupp;

1971 - And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda, by Eric Bogle;
