Sound Archive in call for favourites

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) have invited nominations from the public for this year’s Sounds of Australia selections of historically, culturally and artistically important sound recordings.

Sound Curator at NFSA, Thorsten Kaeding said each generation had its own icons, so everyone should nominate now to ensure their favourites were immortalised in Sounds of Australia.

What sounds, recorded up to 2006, and are so quintessentially Australian that they should be added to this prestigious registry?” Mr Kaeding asked.

Anyone can have their say.”

Nominations open for best recordings

He said the registry, now in its tenth year, included famous names such as AC/DC, Kylie Minogue, The Divinyls, Nick Cave and Archie Roach.

Mr Kaeding said also included were nineteenth-century recordings of extinct Indigenous languages, sounds of native fauna, inspiring speeches, unforgettable jingles, and much more.

Each year, the Australian public nominates new sounds to be added, with final selections determined by a panel of industry experts,” he said.

You can nominate popular songs across all genres as well as advertising jingles, famous speeches, radio broadcasts, or any other sound recordings — the only conditions are that they have to be Australian, and more than 10 years old.”

Nominations can be made via Twitter: @NFSAonline #SoundsOfAustralia; Facebook: facebook.com/nfsaa; email: registry@nfsa.gov.au; or the web: http://bit.ly/nominateSoA.

Nominations close on 19 August and the Sounds of Australia entries will be announced on 8 November.
