Some recent experiences revealed serious misconceptions about what records management achieves in an organisation. So I decided to blog about what it is not...

http://rhizomedigital.com.au/records-management/

These are some of my ideas based on recent conversations with business people. I am surprised, in a way, that organisations still do not understand fully what records management can do for them. But again I am not really that surprised as I have been explaining and advocating the role of records management (and recordkeeping) since I started in this career 7 years ago.

After writing the above blog post I got to thinking about whether or not records professionals (or just me) are focussing too much on our role as protectors of evidence, rather than our skills in being able to deliver tools to support good governance, inclusion, accountability, individual, community and societal memory and identity. Who else does that?

I see my career path as a records professional being all about delivering compliance, but to me records management and archival work is about and should be about much much more.

What choices do I have in being able to explore and deliver on this ideal? Do I have to work in academia or is there a possibility for someone like me to apply these ideas within practice?

I would be interested in any feedback.

Many thanks.
