Online LINK to find Government locations

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has launched a new single-point online platform for accessing “location data” held by the Commonwealth and State Governments.

According to the Department, the new Location Information Knowledge (LINK) platform will make fundamental spatial datasets more accessible and easier to discover.

The Department said that until now, extensive searches across nine jurisdictions were needed to obtain the same information.

Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, Angus Taylor said Government entities held a significant amount of location information that was a strategic national resource.

Accurate location information is a key influencer of productivity, and will pave the way for new and innovative applications that increase efficiencies,” Mr Taylor said.

He said sectors such as insurance, emergency response, transport and agriculture required access to location data for effective and safe business operations.

For example, the openly available Geo-coded National Address File [G-NAF] has been used by Insurance Australia Group in conjunction with its Flood Risk Dataset to inform home owners of flood risk and choices for insurance,” Mr Taylor said.

The G-NAF is also used by emergency response dispatch centres when responding to emergency calls.”

He said having access to consistent and accurate position and road network data would enable cooperative intelligent transport systems such as vehicle charging, and freight, logistics and container management.

Mr Taylor said this allowed for the faster and more efficient supply of goods to market, which was critical for the future of smart cities and regional networks.
