New website for Archive’s treasures

The National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra (NFSA) has launched a new website offering visitors online access to its audiovisual collection.

According to the Chief Executive of the NFSA, Michael Loebenstein the new website  is mobile responsive and features a fresh design with simplified navigation and a heavy focus on the NFSA’s collection materials, from the earliest surviving films and recorded sounds (1896) to today.

Mr Loebenstein said the website showcased the NFSA collection in a series of themed packages including blogs, curated collections and online exhibitions.

He said these were pathways that allowed users to explore and design their own experience.

He said NFSA.gov.au contained more than 50 curated collections featuring rare early performances by Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Jacki Weaver and others.

Mr Loebenstein said there were some of the world’s earliest films (Lumière) and news footage (newsreels) as well as some of Australia’s favourite summer activities such as the beach, surfing, and cricket.

He said the website was developed in partnership with consultants.

For this project, the NFSA joined govCMS, an Australian Government initiative to share resources and skills through an open source platform,” Mr Loebenstein said.

The NFSA’s investment will benefit other Government Agencies, as they will be able to utilise any resources originally developed for our website,” he said.

The new website can be accessed at NFSA.gov.au
