National Archives inks Indonesia deal

The National Archives of Australia has signed a five-year agreement with Indonesia to cooperate on archives and cultural exchanges.

The first initiative under the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will focus on sharing expertise on policies and systems for the effective management of digital records.

The MoU was signed by Director-General of the National Archives, David Fricker and the Director-General of Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia, Mustari Irawan.

"The signing of this MoU renews the long-standing relationship between our institutions at a time when we, as national archives, are supporting our Governments in the transition to a digital economy," Mr Fricker said.

Digital records expertise to be shared

"It is essential that we embrace new technology and collaborate to do the very best for our people, our Governments and our region," he said.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty said the agreement opened the way for further cooperation and exchange.

"Formal links between institutions and the professional relationships formed between their staff members are an important element of the Australia-Indonesia relationship," he said.

"I am looking forward to seeing outcomes of the Australia-Indonesia collaboration in this important field of record collection and management."

Under the MOU, the two nations will continue to collaborate on developing staff skills and sharing professional resources, building on past ties in more than 60 different areas.

Economic policy, education, technology, health, science, law enforcement, defence, intelligence and security have all featured in bilateral links between officials.
