of Australian Children's Literature Inc.

Welcome to the Lu Rees Archives’ first newsletter. We are looking forward to sharing our news, ventures, exhibitions and festivals, and all our ‘goings on’. We aim to celebrate Australian children’s literature with you.

It’s our fortieth birthday this year, and there’s much to celebrate. We hold 25,000 books, with 3,200 in 53 languages; authors’ papers and illustrators’ artworks; unique audiotapes and photographs; 450 research files on authors and illustrators, and tasty items like our chocolate Blinky Bill egg (we saved the wrapper and ate the chocolate!). Our website reveals these treasures and more.  http://www.canberra.edu.au/lurees

This year we are setting up the Lu Rees Foundation to fund the Archives in perpetuity. Our aim is to collect, preserve and make available the artistic output of Australia’s children’s authors and illustrators. We will be inviting you to become a friend of the Archives and receive our newsletter, journal, invitations to events, discounts on merchandise like our book, Showcasing Treasures 40-year story and our limited edition Pixie O’Harris etched glassware. These you can order from our merchandise website.  http://www.canberra.edu.au/lurees/merchandise

We’re sharing our news and events in other ways too. Catch up with us on Twitter and Facebook. We hope you’ll visit us soon – and like us!

A Bird in the Hand exhibition has something for everyone

  • original artwork
  • manuscripts
  • books, including translations
  • a replica of Bob’s writing desk with copies of his little reminder notes
  • a replica of the view from his desk with an image of Bob walking up the path
  • activities for children, and
  • a sofa where children and adults can sit and read his books.

The Lu Rees Archives arranged for this exhibition to occur in conjunction with Canberra Museum And Gallery.  Ann James, Ann Haddon from Books Illustrated, joined by Nicky Lo Bianco guest curator, have curated the exhibition using many original materials and artwork from the Archives. Further information can be found at http://www.museumsandgalleries.act.gov.au/Slideshow/bobgraham.html

Bob-a-thon Festival
The Archives is inviting schools, public libraries, pre-school and day-care centres to celebrate Bob Graham’s picture books during July. Just think of all those children relishing Bob’s books! We hope to receive many inventive, original responses, some of which will feature on the Bob-a-thon Festival website.  http://www.canberra.edu.au/bobathon
We invite you to visit our site, view Bob’s jacket covers, brief blurbs about each, and a guide to registering for the Bob-a-thon Festival. Enjoy!

GoFundMe

Over the years, we have worked hard to complete our holdings of Australian children's authors and illustrators. We have been successful with Joan Phipson and Patricia Wrightson, and we are presently working on Colin Thiele, Hesba Brinsmead and Noela Young. As the years pass, this quest becomes harder. Check out our website for our wish lists. You may be able to help us. Lifeline Book Fairs in Canberra have unearthed many treasures for us, mainly because for 20 years we have had two expert 'spotters'. We've been so successful, we now need to top up the funds we spend on these purchases and hope you can help us. Check out our GoFundMe site  http://www.gofundme.com/8b3s6k.We've raised $1,650 so far and our goal of $2,500 is edging closer. Please help if you can!
