Jingles jangled in Library exhibition

The National Library of Australia has launched an exhibition of advertising material from the past, telling the Australian story in 200 years of popular brand names and advertising messages.

On display are the jingles, songs and catchy phrases which often stay in people’s minds long after the advertisement — and sometimes even the product — have been superseded.

Advertising archives go on show

According to the National Library, The Sell: Australian Advertising 1790s to 1990s is a celebration of the commercial world.

Showcasing more than 200 gems from the Library’s advertising collection, from 1912 Electoral Roll posters to an advertisement that promised ‘the world’s most economical car’ (a Ford for the bargain price of 210 pounds —‘cheaper to run than a horse’), it’s all there, and more.

The Library said that although this sort of ephemera was not meant to last, it has — thanks to the expertise of its preservation staff.

A wealth of printed materials, from posters and flyers to original artwork and printer’s proofs, letters and brochures, has been unearthed from the National Library’s archives to tell Australia’s advertising story.

The exhibition sheds light on two centuries of iconic (and lesser known) Australian brands, some of which will evoke a sense of nostalgia while others will seem spectacularly politically incorrect in today’s marketplace.

The Sell: Australian Advertising 1790s to 1990s runs until 25 April 2017. Admission is free.
