In case you hadn’t already heard, The City of Sydney launched its revamped Historical Atlas of Sydney in May of this year.

It's now easier to access historical maps and research the city's changing boundaries with the new online Historical Atlas of Sydney.

More than 500 maps show streets, buildings, roads and public spaces from 1833 to 1972, making the atlas an important resource for City staff and the public.

The maps can be viewed on computer, tablet or phone. You can also download them free of charge for personal, professional or study purposes.

City Archives worked with our Geographical Information Systems and Web teams to find solutions to navigation, browsing and zooming issues. They set out to present the detail of the maps in a clean and uncluttered way.

Heritage Specialist Hui Wang finds the atlas helpful and convenient to use.

"It saves me a lot of time in estimating the construction date and checking the historical changes of a specific heritage property," Hui says.

Email Archivist
Ben Arnfield for more information or to give feedback about the atlas.
