Many readers of ArchivesLive! will be sad to hear of the recent death of Dr Peter Tyler, eminent historian, and friend to many.

Peter died last Saturday, of a heart attack, after a short illness, at Royal North Shore Hospital.

His funeral will be held this coming Friday at 1pm, at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, South Chapel.

I will attend on behalf of the ASA, both Council and NSW Branch, and also because I considered Peter to be a friend.

Peter wrote the recent history of State Records NSW 1788-2011.
Peter was 'embedded' within SRNSW for 18 months in order to undertake his research, and also to understand the human and cultural dimension of the organisation, its staff, volunteers, and users. As you can imagine, he got to know the SRNSW 'mob' very well.

Peter's book was launched at Parliament House on 31 May 2011.

Peter was a guest presenter to the ASA NSW Branch last November, at which time he gave us a witty and insightful account of his experiences while writing the book.

Peter will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

  • A very good turn out of archivists at Peter TYler's funeral today. Peter wrote his own eulogy, so it was very well written! and it was fascinating to learn more about his life and career/s.

Peter gained a substantial understanding of archives and archivists while writing the history of SRNSW (we are so misunderstood!), and he will be very much missed.
