Facebook Live will be the focus of Australia’s election campaign next week when the first online leader’s debate will be held on the platform.

The Facebook event will be the first time the leaders of Australia’s two major parties will have an election debate live on a social media channel. There are usually three official debates held during an election campaign, held in physical locations.

“These are the platforms that many people, many would say most Australians, see most of their media on, most of their news, and I think it’s important that we have an innovative election and that we use the platforms that Australians use”, Malcolm Turnbull said.

Similar to Periscope and Meerkat, Facebook Live is a ‘real-time’ video stream that allows you to film your experiences on any device, whilst engaging with your viewer's comments.

As Australian politics makes a leap towards engaging with the public in real time, we wonder if anyone has thought about capturing the broadcast and the subsequent public engagement from a record management perspective?
