Document perservation is so important - The environmental conditions of the three He Tohu documents are closely monitored, and there are also planned intervals when their physical condition is checked.

The 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition - Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine is assessed every 3-months when the pages on display are moved, 1835 He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni - Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand and 1840 Te Tiriti o Waitangi - Treaty of Waitangi are checked annually.

In this video you will see the Archives NZ Conservators carefully removing the documents in preparation for their condition assessment procedures. A printed facsimile of the document replaces the original on display during the day while they are not available to be viewed.

The Conservators visually assess each document and collate data that will assist in determining if there are measureable changes to any of the documents over time.
