The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) has launched an online showcase of its Oral History interviews.

The release of the series of interviews with actors, musicians, filmmakers, broadcasters and technical experts means audiences can now listen to the stories behind Australia's favourite films, television programs and songs as told by those who created them.

Oral History Coordinator at NFSA, Bronwyn Murphy said: "We are delighted to make this selection of interviews available online, so that audiences can explore the fascinating stories we have recorded over the years.

"More Oral History interviews will be published regularly, so we invite people to subscribe to our SoundCloud channel to receive updates."

NFSA reveals stories behind works

Many of the anecdotes contained in the interviews have never been published before.

Armourer John Bowring (Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdrome, Australia, The Matrix) tells the story behind the famous knife from Crocodile Dundee:

"They had this film that needed this knife. They said they needed a big knife. So I went away and made an aluminium one, I brought it in and they said, 'That's it. When do we get the stainless steel one?' I said, 'You don't actually cut anything in the film, we don't really need a stainless steel knife.
"Paul Hogan then said, 'What about the bush tucker scene, where I open a can with the knife?
' I said I didn't remember reading that scene, and he responded, 'That's because I'm still writing it. Start building the knife."

Musicians in the sound bank include Gotye, Doc Neeson (The Angels), Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea), Vika Bull and Todd Hunter (Dragon).

Andrew Denton, Leigh Sales, Jeff McMullen, Sandra Sully are among the journalists and broadcasters recorded, while actors include Wendy Hughes (My Brilliant Career), Terry Gill (The Flying Doctors), Bruce Spence (Stork) and Jeanie Drynan (Muriel's Wedding).
