Archives takes step into the future

The National Archives of Australia has officially opened its new $64 million Preservation Facility in Canberra, an event the Director-General of the Agency, David Fricker has labelled “a monumental moment in the Archives’ history”.

Mr Fricker said the preservation and storage of Australia’s irreplaceable national archival collection was now safeguarded for generations to come.

The national archival collection comprises millions of Australian Government records, reflecting our history and identity,” Mr Fricker said.

He said it included paper and audiovisual files, models, maps, plans and photographs.

New preservation facility opened

The Archives is charged with preserving, storing and making accessible these records for the benefit of all Australians,” Mr Fricker said.

He said the National Archives Preservation Facility provided contemporary storage for more than 100 km of paper records and 9 km of audiovisual records.

The purpose-built facility is environmentally controlled, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient,” Mr Fricker said.

Its passive, green design will minimise energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and its environmental footprint.”

He said the new building covered a total area of 17,000 sq m, and housed contemporary purpose-designed workspaces for conservation and digitisation activities and office accommodation for 150 staff.

Attorney-General, Senator George Brandis opened the facility, and said it was a key part of the National Archives’ strategy to extend and enhance its preservation and storage capacity for significant Government records such as photos, paintings, Cabinet decisions, letters and even reports of UFO sightings.
