Archive honour for capability matrix

A tool to help Government Agencies preserve digital information has been recognised with a prestigious Mander Jones award.

The National Archives was announced as the winner of category 1A in the annual awards for its publication Digital information and records management capabilities (the capability matrix).

The awards category recognises a publication that makes the greatest contribution to the archives profession in Australia, written by or on behalf of a corporate body.

Prestigious Award presented

The award was presented to the Director-General of the National Archives, David Fricker at the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) conference in Hobart this week.

Accepting the award, Mr Fricker said managing information and records in a digital business context was “an increasingly complex undertaking due to the proliferation of technologies and formats, and huge volumes of data”.

If information and records are not effectively managed during their active business life, they risk being lost or becoming technically obsolete and therefore unavailable for inclusion in archival collections,” Mr Fricker said.

He said the secret to successfully managing business and government information lay in enhancing the skills of information management professionals.

This new publication contains a capability matrix that outlines skills and knowledge needed by organisations and by professionals in the field.”

He said the capability matrix was developed within the Australian Government context but was readily applicable to other areas, including commercial organisations.

The Mander Jones awards were introduced by the ASA in 1996 to recognise excellence in archival publishing.
