APS embracing digital data management

A new report on the Australian Public Service’s progress towards digital information management has found that three-quarters of APS Agencies now manage their records digitally.

The report from the National Archives of Australia (NAA) details the progress made on the Digital Continuity 2020 Policy and draws on surveys undertaken by the National Archives in 2015 and 2016 and identifies achievements in information management capability and performance, as well as areas for improvement.

Director-General of the Archives, David Fricker (pictured) said that although Agencies had made progress in digital information management, there was still more that needed to be done.

Majority of Agencies in line

The continuing potential for loss of valuable Government information is one of our greatest concerns,” Mr Fricker said.

We are working together with Agencies to improve that and assist with their progress towards digital information continuity by 2020.”

He said NAA’s  Digital Continuity 2020 Policy aimed to integrate robust information management into business processes to ensure the best Government programs and services.

Mr Fricker said the Policy enabled information to be reused for economic and social benefits, while protecting the rights and entitlements of Australians.

He said that from 2010 to 2015, the number of Agencies working digitally had increased by 44 per cent, with almost three-quarters of Agencies reporting they now managed most records digitally.

The new report outlines how the Archives is leading Agencies to implement the policy, with a drive to improve information management across Government,” Mr Fricker said.
