Ancestry Digitization Grant Program 2021

In 2021, Ancestry is launching its digitisation Grant Program for Australia and New Zealand and submissions are now open.

The aim of this program is to encourage and allow holders of original historical content collections (of any size) to achieve a digitisation outcome that may otherwise be difficult for any number of reasons. Each year, a total of three grants will be awarded within AU & NZ (combined) and scanning would begin at the earliest opportunity.

The program is new and Ancestry are strongly encouraging any feedback. The aim of the program is to support the digitisation of historical collections and Ancestry note that it should be an easy method in which to achieve that with archives, collectors or collections of any size.

  • 2 x Gold Grants up to the value of $100,000 AUD for digitisation services to be awarded within Australia and New Zealand to assist with digistation within the archival & family history community. Also included is five years of free Ancestry access.
    The individual grants have a maximum value of $100,000 AUD but can also cover works of any lesser amount up to that total figure. The grant will be for imaging of records only, meaning that the services provided are for scanning of paper or microform collections.

  • 2 x Silver Grants up to the value of $25,000 AUD for digitisation services to be awarded within Australia and New Zealand to assist with digistation within the archival & family history
    community. Also included is five years of free Ancestry access.
    The individual grants have a maximum value of $25,000 AUD but can also cover works of any lesser amount up to that total figure. The grant will be for imaging of records only, meaning that the services provided are for scanning of paper or microform collections.

  • 1 x Bronze Grant up to the value of $15,000 AUD for digitisation services to be awarded within Australia and New Zealand to assist with digistation within the archival & family history community. Also included is five years of free Ancestry access.
    The individual grant has a maximum value of $15,000 AUD but can also cover works of any lesser amount up to that total figure.

The grant submission period will begin immediately and your questions and submissions are encouraged.

Please note:

  • The Grant Program amounts represent a value – not a cash payment. Ancestry will scan the selected material on site (or offsite if preferable) with a labour value of the amounts listed in the documentation.
  • The Grant Program does not replace standard content discussions. If you would like to engage Ancestry relating to the scanning or purchase of historical content but under different terms to the Grant Program then that path is still very much available to you. The Grant Program is designed to be simple and static in its terms as to allow an efficiency that typical discussions don’t.
  • No collection is too small. However, the more of the offered value you can utilise, the stronger your submission will be.
  • There’s currently no ‘application’ documentation - just ensure it contains the following as a minimum (but more is always better!);
    • Collection Name
    • Date Range
    • Current Format (loose paper, bound volume, film etc).
    • Estimated Image Count
    • Estimated Record Count (i.e. there may be more than one record per page / image)

How do I apply?

Review the documentation below to ensure you agree to the terms contained within. If so, please send an email to jreeve@ancestry.com containing information on the collection / content you wish
to see digitised – the more information the better but as a minimum;

  • Collection Name(s)
  • Date Range
  • Record Count / Image Count
  • Existing Format (i.e. paper, volumes, microfiche)

Submissions are welcomed and the current deadline is 31 July, shortly after which the grants will be awarded.
