The Archives' Western Australia Office is temporarily closed as we relocate our collection and staff to new premises. The move is being made ahead of the expiry of the lease on our Perth home of 42 years at East Victoria Park.
To ensure the safe relocation of the collection to our new repository in Belmont, access to records will not be possible during this time.
Access services will resume by March 2019 from our conveniently located new office in Northbridge.
Please note the National Archives now has a dual-site operational model in Western Australia, with access services (Northbridge) and records storage (Belmont) in separate locations.
This change means records must now be ordered in advance. To avoid delays, we encourage researchers to contact us before they visit. Staff will be unavailable to attend to questions from 24 December until 1 January.
New Office and Research Centre
The new Western Australia office and research centre on the ground floor of William Square, corner William and Francis streets, Northbridge will open in March 2019. Lease arrangements with building owners Warrington Property were finalised in December 2018.
The new office will incorporate a research centre, seminar facilities, an exhibition space and administration offices for Perth staff.
It will be a convenient one-stop shop for all your National Archives needs, from viewing records to taking in the latest display of collection material.

New repository
More than 14 shelf kilometres (72,000 boxes) of records stored at East Victoria Park premises are being relocated to a new state-of-the-art facility in Belmont, developed with Western Australian company Compu-stor.
The Archives has signed a 10 year lease for the storage facility which will house up to 16 shelf kilometres of collection material.
The Belmont premises is a cost-effective, specialised storage facility that provides a controlled storage environment for the preservation and management of archival records.
Access to records
There will be an unavoidable disruption to access services before, during and after the relocation. During the relocation period, researchers will be able to freely access digitised records on the Archives’ website. They will also be able to lodge reference queries/access requests online. These requests will be processed in February 2019, once the relocation is complete.

If your need to access records is urgent, please contact us at ask us a question and agency service centre to discuss your request. It is possible that records held elsewhere by the Archives may meet your needs. Staff will be unavailable to attend to questions from 24 December until 1 January.
