Volunteers from the ANZ's GIVE program (Giving, Investing, Volunteering and providing Emergency support) spent the day at the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives on Friday 21 August working on sorting our extensive collection of loose newspaper clippings from the 1980s.

The Archives holds ~12m, or ~50,000 clippings, comprehensively documenting LGBTI life in the mainstream press from the 1890s to the present. These clippings have been copied onto acid-free paper and filed chronologically. The additional loose clippings seen here are being sorted and compared to existing holdings in preparation for copying and indexing. 8,500 clippings have been indexed to date.

ANZ offers employees one day of paid volunteer leave per year to make a difference in their communities. Additional sessions with other ANZ volunteer groups are planned in September, with a number of ANZ volunteers expressing interest in more regular volunteering opportunities. Thank you to all the ANZ staff members who volunteered at the Archives today!

A large number of the tasks and projects associated with the Archives require more training and time commitment than a single day, so the opportunity to provide pathways for volunteers via the ANZ's GIVE program is most welcome.
