  • Susan Kennedy, Regarding archiving short films and records from a short film festival, ACMI may be a possibility, though I believe they have an embargo on all material at present - I may be wrong. The NFSA is somewhat more able to take material, particularly film material, though they appear to take more of a museological approach to paper-based archival material, whcih can be frustrating. Some of the university archives may be a possibility, though I am not aware of any notable archival audiovisual holdings across the uni sector.

  • Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone knows of an ethnographic study of community archives in Australia? This is a field of study I am particularly interested in - I just finished research on YouTube users in Australia, but it is not an ethnographic study. I am also keen to make connections with researchers doing this kind of work. As far as I am aware there is no research by archival scholars in this area, but there might be from associated disciplines such as anthropology, communication etc.

  • Would ACMI (Aust Centre for the Moving Image) abe a possible place?
  • Hi

I was wondering if anyone would have some advice on where I might offer a collection of movies and papers from a short film festival that is no longer running?

  • There are so many valuable community archives out there but they struggle to get practical attention from their organisations due to lack of staff, lack of time to apply for project grants and thus, funding which is very competitive. They all appreciate that they are of value. Not sure how this can be resolved
  • Happy New Year to you too Anna! The Archives live site has been brilliant browsing so far - loads of ideas and discussions. It will keep me on my toes!

  • Happy New Year Eva,

    Welcome to the group!

    All the best - Anna

  • Really keen to join a Community Archives SIG. I am responsible for both local government and community archives in my institution and would love to have a forum to discuss aspects particular to parts of my collection.

  • Thanks for the responses regards Govt. archives representation and a SIG. I was really voicing a concern I recognise about representation at conferences and most archives and records events. Membership is a different matter and it would be great to get people participating more in the ASA regardless.

I would like to push ahead with the application related to a Community Archives SIG. And one of the first items on the discussion list would be the definition of community archives, as it has been conceptualised in many different ways - in my experience.

  • Just catching up on this Group and note that there are 57 members, which is great.

Thank you Louise for the details on forming a SIG. Looks like we have "more five or more members of the Society wish to form a Special Interest
Group (SIG), they shall seek the approval of the Council of the Society by
applying to the Secretary and submitting a statement of their objects".

Let me know where we are with this initiative and how I could assist.

Series system in small archives?

HiWondering if people use the series system? Im looking at bringing a small collection under archival control. Items include a scrapbook from a mayors wife, minutes from a local community organisation from the turn of last century. I would like to use the series system but dont think having loads of single items series is very effective. I guess I could create "photographs" and "minutes" collections. I need to make it as simple as possible. Its been difficult to find practicle case studies,…

Personal archives: Documenting the stories of our lives

Personal archives: Documenting the stories of our lives By Helen Barrett ©GettyCinema history: Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ Most people discard dry-cleaning receipts, but not Vivien Leigh. The Oscar-winning actress, who appeared in 19 films and nearly 40 stage plays over more than 30 years, found time to file hers among 10,000 documents in her personal archive. Today’s fashion historians are grateful: Leigh’s laundry records offer insights into how mid-20th…

What do we want from this group?

Great to see so many people involved in this community archives group! I would like to hear what everyone wants from this group? Expectations? Since starting work in the community sector I have wanted to find others who are doing this kind of work so that we may use each other for a support network. I did make a few contacts, but people move around all the time. I also want to highlight the diversity of what community archives are or can be. I am not sure how we might go about that, but it…
