Apologies for cross-posting!

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear from any of you who have gone through the process of having your artefacts / museum objects / archival collection assessed by a valuer. Is there such a person who does this?

After a meeting which was held to discuss the appropriate location for St Patrick's College's artworks and photos, the discussion led to the issue of what our entire collection entails and what it is worth. I think possibly the Headmaster is considering this from the point of view of appropriate insurance value for the overall collection.

Any advice or pointers will be most gratefully received!

Regards,

Catriona

  • Hi Catriona,

We frequently have items and occasionally entire collections valued. A good place to start would be the Tax Incentives for the Arts, or the Cultural Gifts website http://www.arts.gov.au/cgp

While this is specifically aimed at institutions registered for the program and donors, there are lists of registered  valuers according to specialty on the site.

    • Thanks Helen!
    • Hi Catriona,

I began a valuation process of an art, museum and archives collection with identifying the high value art works, then objects and will follow on with other items. I have used Dunbar Sloane, registered valuers, who provide a good service with various  specialists (there are other valuers and auction houses that also offer a professional service). They will provide a written certification, for both market and insurance values. Market value is what they would pay you for the item and insurance value is what you would need to pay to replace the item  (even if it isn't replaceable). It is not cheap to do valuations so identify the high value items first. You may have a benchmark of valueing items or a series of items over $2,000 or half that ) I suggest doing it in stages and also start looking at auction catalogues to get an idea of auction prices for similar items. It doesn't take long to build up a reasonable working knowledge on the subject to make rough estimates and use professional valuers for the higher value items.  You can buy catalogues for around $10 each. Hope this helps. Pauline Porteous (contact me by telephone if you want to discuss further. 04 4981442)
