  • I'm having difficulty with the 'following' - but it may be that the technology does not work as I expected.

I have done the 'follow all' in the forum discussion but it seems I only get an email notification of a completley new discussion topic. If I want to follow responses to the discussion that come afterwards I need to 'follow' the topic as well by clicking on the individual discussion topic. Is this so? Or am I a nong when it comes to ning?

    Dear All,
At the recent ASA Council meeting, (3-4 Dec 2010), Council reconconfirmed committment to progressing digital preservation and making accessible the 'Aus-Archivists' listserv postings. The outcome being the archives will be available via the ASA website.

Council also wants to confirm for the Aus-Archivists list subscribers what happened to the list - the Aus-Archivists list became defunct on 3rd party system upgrade and transfer to new providers. As this happened concurrently with some preliminary work developing a web 2.0 interactive site (the Ning), Council determined that, with the limited person resources available at the time, the list would be left in temporary abeyance and the ArchivesLive! Ning site made immediately available as an alternative.

Council is currently investigating the options for the discussion list but also encourages everyone to use the ArchivesLive! site. The ArchivesLive site allows subscribers to receive notification via email when there is activity. To utilise this feature there are some options:

Email in My Settings in your profile - https://archiveslive.ning.com/profiles/profile/emailSettings
This allows you to specify certain types or alerts to do with you and groups you belong to.

    "Following”
You can “follow” a particular item (blog, forum discussion etc).

You can opt to follow (and thus receive email notifications about) Events, Blog Posts, Pages, Forum Discussions, Videos, Photos or content from a particular member.

To set up these email notifications on Events, Blog Posts, Pages or Forum Discussions, you will find the "Follow" link on the individual entries, at the bottom of the page.

To follow all the discussions on the Forum, select All Discussions then select ‘follow’ from the bottom of the page. This way you will get an email when a new discussion is started or a current discussion has a new comment added.

We are looking at how to enable an email digest of the activity but this requires a bit more technical magic and is not an option at this stage.

Please continue to provide feedback on how we can use the various technologies available to improve communication between all interested individuals, not just ASA members, archivists and like minded colleagues and friends but those who haven’t yet discovered Archives Matter!

  • Hi Jo
Thanks for posting this important information about a listserv to this social networking site.

Does it strike anyone as strange that we have to receive information about our professional association Council meeting discussion about the demise of the Society's listserv from a posting to the RMAA listserv then cross posted back to the social networking site? ...

Equally, should this information also be sent to all ASA members through that old-fashioned channel of email?

I am on a number of listservs. The listserv is a wonderful resource for many reasons and I hope this one remains active.

Yes you can get information through other sources but as Robyn identified it requires active searching rather than passive receipt. When a person is new to a field or has an agenda they tend to be more active. When there is no perceived requirement for new knowledge or disinterest in searching then the participation rate will decrease. If someone receives an email advising a new/revisited topic this can stimulate interest where the interest may have waned or been non-existent.

I have become aware of some interesting and some not-so interesting news articles through this forum which have dealt with changing technology, managing disaster etc; as well as general information being shared throughout the community and people seeking help or advice.

The listserv is also a timely means of seeking feedback. I have seen wiki's where responses have taken days, weeks or months.

    Long live the listserv

  • I too have been sorry to see the end of the listserv. I am generally happy to give new technology a go. However just as television did not end the use of radio and cinema, new technology often brings new features rather than providing an enhanced version of former features.

It sounds like the loss of the listserv was perhaps an unintended result of the upgrade to the new server and the ASA have done their best to provide the archival community with an alternative. Can I suggest that a review be conducted soon to look at the benefits and problems of the new system. Perhaps if the ASA members feel that too much has been lost then plans can be made to either resurrect the list or plug the gaps.

One last thought having talked to our IT manager at work, he says that some social network sites can be configured to allow an email bulletin to be sent daily of all new posts. This might be a first step.

Ditto. I have not logged onto or looked into Ning and am unlikely to do so until I have s specific need, therefore I am missing out on all the incidental information I was receiving by email. Just because a toy is new doesn’t mean it is better.

    Hello all,

As one of the many people around the world that David mentioned as having found the ASA list a valuable resource and discussion space, I too was saddened that it was discontinued. Ning is not a real alternative; apart from the different 'ethos' of a social space as compared to a list, there must be many organizations, like my own, whose internet security policies simply do not allow access to such sites at all.

There have been various flurries of discussion from time to time on teh UK RM list about the desirability of moving to Web 2.0 platforms rather than continuing with the e-mail list, and I have to say that this does not represent progress to me - far better to have a clunkily 'old-school' delivery mechanism that all can access, than a system with all the bells and whistles which excludes those who do not have access at the workplace or a computer at home. And there is the issue of the list archives ... this is not to point the finger of blame at the ASA, but to worry about what seems to be an increasing trend or mind-set among list owners in our professions.

All the best from frozen, snowed-in north east England,

    Rachel.

For the sake of this discussion, but apologies to RMAA for hosting it here, I AGREE wholeheartedly with these sentiments.
I also do not like that I am outed in the Ning space and forced to have a social identity and make friends and so on. I just want to read interesting information about what people are doing in my field in a format that is easy to navigate and receive.
    The listserv was not broken.
