Storage space suggestion please

Hi everyone. I hope you are all well and safe.

Our archive space going to be move near future and I have asked to put archive room requirement include my dream storage space. : )

Do you have any suggestion for must have item for archive storage and your working space?

I have read standard requirement for archive material storage space but I can not complies everything what standard suggested. This is why I would like to ask your suggestion.

I am going to ask for separate room for my working space and storage so I can keep temperature stable for physical items. (no carpet, steel shelves, etc.)

Thank you in advance

  • Hi Maki,

I agree with everything Catherine has said below, and would back the statement that it all depends what is in - and what will be - your collection. Art storage racks have been a must-have in our Archive, as well as plan cabinets and large document and map hangers.

    Good luck with your move!

  • Then ask for more that you need, double the space, then when they cut it, you should still have enough!  :)

  • Thank you Catherine, I don't have a new space yet. School will find a space according by my request. I will add compactus on my list now.

  • Dear Maki

It somewhat depends on what you have in your Archives, and how large your collection is. I second the suggestion for a compactus for document storage - it really is the most efficient use of space.  Do you need storage for film etc- then perhaps a fridge. Don't forget to set aside room to store archives supplies - board, paper, etc plus a disaster recovery bin. My recovery bin - stocked to preserve paper documents if there is an emergency - is constantly being moved around by the cleaners so while it is useful asit has wheels, I think it may have been better to just store the items in a purpose built cupboard. Finally we have VESDA - very early smoke detection system.

    Good luck :)

  • Hi Maki,

I would recommend you get a scale plan of your new space, so you can then scale pieces of paper to represent storage options and move them around.  Definitely have a separate space for your work area and the collection.  No carpet, separate air-con, humidity control, etc. A large standing height work/layout table for your office space on wheels, if you have the space.

What you end up with, will depend on what is in your collection.  I would recommend compactus over fixed shelving.  Do you need long form shelving for large textile boxes or do you need custom plan cabinets with drawers?

    All the best!
