Should we beware of the Ninuku Archivist?

I am intrigued by a new service called Ninuku Archivist (www.ninuku.com),designed for Facebook users who want to archive and preserve their Facebookcontents for prosperity. Their slogan is “share, save, delete” and theyencourage Facebook members to use the service to create, download, and printmonthly PDF files of their Facebook content and then delete the originalcontent from their accounts.

The company acknowledges the vulnerability of digital information and media as well as issues of privacyand security of content on Facebook. Ninuku, which in a Philippine dialect means “it’s who I am”, states “.. thetruth is that even in the digital age, old fashioned paper is still the mostreliable medium for storing your memories.” Their angle is that Facebook usersshould not leave too much of their shared information on their pages lest it isused later by identity thieves.

This must be a first for a web service to steer people away from keeping personal information digitally to printing and creating files.

  • I think the real question with this is should people really be archiving their Facebook material and producing large amounts of paper to do so?
  • Hi Peter

Facebook poses a number of issues that need discussion from an archival and recordkeeping perspective. Using Facebook for work requires a number of compromises with respect to maintaining personal and public space - users may only have one account, which links personal and professional profiles. Notifications can be sent to only one email address, requiring people to receive work related information in their personal email accounts or personal information in their work accounts, both of which cause problems for the capture and identification of records. Facebook allows users to download their personal profile information, but not the information relating to any pages they administer - another recordkeeping issue. If Ninuku have found a way to capture managed account information they are to be applauded.
