The USQ Historical Archives consists in 6 collections, one of them, the Toowoomba Chronicle Collection fall under the auspices of the Archives for management purposes. The collection is housed in a secured environmentally-controlled room on our Toowoomba campus and comprises of the following:
- estimated 1.5million photographic negatives used for publication in the Toowoomba Chronicle from 1953 to 2002
- comprehensive card referencing system for identification and retrieval of negatives
- 37,000 editions of Toowoomba Chronicle newspaper from 1861 to 2009 held on microfilm rolls
- Scrapbook collection of 90 volumes containing published photographs in the Toowoomba Chronicle from 1955 to 2001
We consider that this is an outstanding pictorial and historical archive of high local, State and National significance and because part of the collection is fast deteriorating (negatives), a Digitalisation project would be beneficial and timely.
We are keen to explore potential opportunities to digitise the collection and we are looking for possible grant opportunities. I wonder if someone could know of any possible grants that would be suitable for this digitisation project or could you recommend potential websites that we could monitor.
I appreciate your advice.
Thanks.

  • Have you liased with the State Library of Queensland?  Museums and Galleries Queensland have a good handle on grants Check with them they are very switched on

    • Hi Ros,

We have the Community Heritage Grant from the National Library of Australia in mind but maybe there is some other kind of grant that we are not aware of?

      Thanks,

      Monica

  • Hi Nadine,

Thanks for your reply. I have already gone through these websites but there is nothing related with the project we are interested in. The project is focused in the digitisation of the photograph negatives.

    Regards,

    Monica

  • Hi Monica I notice that some of the issues of the Toowoomba Chronicle have been digitised on TROVE ... In terms of grants have you tried your local council or any local organisations? I did see this webpage: https://www.qld.gov.au/community/community-organisations-volunteeri...

    I hope this helps.
