Hello,

I am hoping to connect with others around how to navigate complex ethical considerations (i.e. privacy, confidentiality, consent) when researching a video archive. I am a PhD student who is currently doing research on a video archive of a social worker/counsellor from Australia.

The video archive contains footage of psychotherapy sessions and educational teaching. The aim of my research project is to focus on the counsellor’s skill/approach to therapy, rather than on the clients they were working with. The counsellor passed away 10 years ago and received consent (at the time) for the videos to be recorded. However, any further consent regarding future uses of the video archive have not been clearly articulated.

The video archive is a ‘treasure trove’ for practitioners as this counsellor was very skilled and researching their video archive could provide a rich opportunity for new findings. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding how I might approach this research project from an ethical standpoint? Any questions, suggestions, connections to possible resources/people would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Kelsi Semeschuk
