We are small community with all sort of preserving material from photographs to printed media, video or audio plus some other materials.

Some material is preserved in archives, but a lot of material is still in people's homes. We like collect more, before is too late.

Our next step is to start modernizing archive and start with digitalization.

On the market is a lot of options, which one is right?

As a community we don't have a lot of money or none, but we must go with the time.

I like to ask experts on the field about the experience about two programs,

one is ICA-Atom, which is free, but require IT knowledge, or Archive manager from Dataflair WA as paid program with yearly support.

Our community is scattered around Australia in all main cities and we like include in work many volunteers to be able to participate in project.

Thank you!

Kind Regards

Florjan Auser

  • Dear Florijan, i am pleased you met with David.  i don't know what you mean about data on the web as archive manager is not web based or it does not have to be.  my email is pauline@archives.syd.catholic.org.au

our user group met last week and David Clements was present.  you obviously have lots of problems. be in contact, cheers pauline

  • Hello Flojan

I am wondering if you have noticed the upcoming workshops on Digitisation that we are holding in Sydney on 18 October. One or both of these would give you an excellent grounding and provide answers to your questions and more. You would then be in an excellent position to make the right decisions for your community. http://http://www.archivists.org.au/events/event/digitisation-maste...

  • I would recommend Archive Manager as we have used it and taken also all the upgrades over the years.  It has many features that can be developed in a smal archives.  There are many of us out there using it for its many benefits.  It was originally designed for a school archives and therefore has features of ability to document not only records but objects and then photographs can be added.  It is a relational database and can be used as required by the establishment and developed as i have done for our collection. I am not in favour of so called free products they prove costly in the end with no support and also no development.  Where are you Florijan? by which i mean what city?  As there is a user group here in Sydney of Dataflair and you could come and meet some of us and even see how we are using this product which i highly recommend and many have taken on as a result and all are very happy with it.  Be in contact if you require any further information.  I suggest you have a look at the samply product or at how others are using it.  sincerely pauline garland
    • Dear Pauline, thank you for reply. I'm Sydney and I like to join user group of Dataflair. Please send me on my email how I can contact you.  Last night I meet with David from Dataflair, quite impressive discussion.
Big question with all data on web based content is security of the data and permissions from people who donated material. How is managed this?
I know passwords and so on but..we know even big companies can't managed this problem.?
      Kind Regards Florjan
