Each new year ushers in new offerings; museum openings are among them. 2019 will welcome in new attractions within this sector, as new buildings or new additions are anticipated to open their doors and greet visitors with a variety of memorabilia, masterpieces or magnificent finds or collections. Here is a roundup of museums set to open in 2019.

Statue of Liberty Museum, New York, New York

Scheduled to open in May 2019, the new 26,000-square-foot, Statue of Liberty Museum will be home to the statue’s original torch – to be housed behind 22 feet high glass walls - and have unobstructed views of Lady Liberty within its state-of-the-art LEED gold certified building with a green roof. The $100 million museum will contain interactive displays, museum galleries and an immersive theater experience. As for its building materials, the Statue of Liberty Museum is being constructed with the same granite, bronze and copper that 19th-century architect Richard Morris Hunt incorporated in the statue’s pedestal. Its roof is planted with native meadow grasses to create a natural habitat for local and migrating birds.

An exact date has not been announced as of yet but in 2019 the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is apparently coming soon with its mission of exploring the art and science of movies and the film industry. The 300,000-square-foot museum and film center will hold state-of-the-art galleries, exhibition spaces, movie theaters, educational areas and special event spaces. Permanent exhibits will delve into the creative process of filmmaking along with a mix of temporary exhibitions. A long-term exhibit with the working title, “Where Dreams Are Made: A Journey Inside the Movies,” takes over two floors with key objects from the collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an array of projected multi-screen film presentations.

Anticipated to open in the summer of 2019, this $90 million, privately funded museum will celebrate this late 19th- and early 20th-century artistic movement by showcasing the collection of local businessman and collector Rudy Ciccarello. Pieces will encompass metalwork, lighting, pottery, tile, furniture, photography and other decorative arts. Standing five stories tall and having 137,000 square feet, the museum is said to be comprised of granite from South America and feature bronze detailing. Its interior will contain an atrium, a circular staircase and 40,000 square feet of gallery space along with a 100-seat auditorium, resource library, children’s education center, 9,000-square-foot destination restaurant, café, retail store, graphic arts studio and event space.

Opening on March 28, 2019, in downtown Doha, this national museum will be the centerpiece of Qatar’s past, present and future with a focus on the country’s history, heritage and culture. With its design by architect Jean Nouvel said to have drawn inspiration from a desert rose, the building will hold a 220-seat auditorium, two retail outlets, two restaurants and a café, a dedicated food forum preserving culinary traditions, research center and laboratories and a park with indigenous plants. Visitors will see exhibitions combining historic objectives and contemporary components, with entire walls becoming cinematic screens and handheld mobile devices guiding people through thematic displays.

Set for September 2019, this museum will have gone from being within the ground floor of a Jewish community center to opening its doors in Dallas’ West End district as a 55,000-square-foot facility. This museum will have an expanded examination of the Holocaust with dozens of video testimonies from Dallas area survivors, along with new, in-depth technology-enriched exhibits on genocide, human rights issues and American ideals. Its layout will feature a feature a Cinemark XD 250-seat theater, two classrooms, a temperature-controlled library and archive, and a special reflection and memorial area for visitors that is over three floors.

In the downtown area of this Northern Californian city, the Chico’s Children’s Museum will open on January 15, 2019.  With a mission of “to connect and learn through play,” the museum will be designed to accommodate all young visitors. It will contain a multi-sensory environment zone, especially designed for children with special needs, and a swing that enables children in wheelchairs to safely swing. One-third of the museum is all about a miniature artistic replica of the city of Chico, which includes a climbing tree and various hands-on exhibits. The other two-thirds will be divided into interactive rotating exhibits.

With a soft opening in late December 2018 but having a grand opening ceremony in January, the Mascot Hall of Fame sums up its name as a permanent place for honoring U.S. sports mascots. Created in mind for children, the museum was founded by David Raymond, who played the original Phillie Phanatic (the mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies) from 1978 to 1993, and is based on the south shore of Lake Michigan.  Along with honoring these particular sports legends, the Mascot Hall of Fame will also hold various interactive exhibit areas that focus on what’s called S.T.E.A.M. education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).Guests will experience exhibits such as the "Department of Furry Arts," the "Science of Silliness Lab" and the "Phuzzical Education Department.”

Bauhaus was an influential art and design school established in Germany a century ago, having one of its locations in Dessau, that will mark the centennial of its founding in 2019. On September 8, the opening of the Bauhaus Museum will display the collection of the  Dessau Foundation and having an exhibition space of 2,1000 square metres and a total usable area of 3,500 square metres. With a design described as being a “building within a building,” the museum will be located in the city park in the center of Dessau. Its exhibition space will display items made by the school along with a variety of contemporary artworks.

This 2019 arrival is said to be the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of more than 50 music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. Billed as a place of education and preservation for this influence, the 56,000-square-foot museum will welcome visitors with a Rivers of Rhythm Pathway. where they will be taken from the beginnings of American music with Southern religious and blues traditions to hip-hop and Rhythm & Blues.

Within this Swiss city, this 2019 addition is a bit different, in that it’s the forming of an arts district. Yes, Lausanne is experiencing a multi-million project to relocate the city’s museums and galleries to one central district. Located ext to the Lausanne train station, PLATEFORME 10 will bring three museums together. The first, the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts, is scheduled to open the doors to its fine art collection in autumn 2019. The other two museums, the Musée de l’Eysée (for photography) and Mudac (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Art), will open before the end of 2021.

Also known as the Norton, this art museum is set to unveil its transformative $100 million Norman Foster-designed expansion in February 2019. The expansion and renovation, which began in November 2015, has resulted in enhancing its 6.3-acre campus with an additional 12,000 square feet of gallery space for exhibitions, an education center with two new classrooms and student gallery, the 210-seat state-of-the-art Stiller Family Foundation Auditorium, the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Restaurant (which includes a garden terrace), an adjoining 9,000-square-foot sculpture garden, a 4,000-square-foot soaring Great Hall, and six restored 1920s-era historic houses to accommodate an artists-in-residence program and the Director’s home. The museum will reopen on February 9, 2019, with eight new exhibitions and numerous works of art from its collection that have not been on view in more than two years.

Stewart Indian School will become a cultural center and museum this spring.STEWART INDIAN SCHOOL

In the spring of 2019, a building that is known as the former Stewart Indian School in Carson City will become a new cultural center and museum is scheduled to open inside one of the campus’ historic stone buildings – one of more than 60 such buildings that still remain on the 240-acre campus. The 7,100-square foot museum will be housed in the school’s former administration building. Opened by the federal government in 1890, the original purpose of the school was to train and educate Indian children with the ultimate goal of assimilation, stripping them of their native traditions and language. The purpose eventually shifted from vocational training to academics in the 1960s. The school closed in 1980 and the campus would become the property of the state of Nevada.
