Dr Carmen Lawrence to give keynote at ASA 2018 in Perth (25-28 September, 2018)

21 MAY 2018 — In 2018, the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. Annual Conference will be held in Perth between 25 and 28 September. Dr Lawrence is a former Premier of Western Australia, and member of Federal Parliament.

As WA Premier in the 1990s, Dr Lawrence sought to fully implement recommendations of the WA Inc Royal Commission on archives and recordkeeping , recommendations that she saw as an essential and needed reform for the integrity of government. This included the establishment of SROWA as a fully independent statutory office.

Dr. Lawrence was also the first woman to become Premier of a State of the Commonwealth of Australia. After leaving the State Parliament of Western Australia Lawrence became a Member of the House of Representatives in the Australian federal parliament.

Dr Lawrence retired from politics in 2007. She is now Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Change in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Western Australia and was, until recently, Chair of the Australian Heritage Council.

The Conference theme in 2018 is 'Archives in a Blade Runner Age'. The conference poses the question of how, in an era of 'fake news', 'alternative facts' and digital disruption, we can nurture reliable shared memory. Memory that provides the foundation of identity and ensures the accountability of our institutions to society.

Registration for the conference is now open. You can find out more about the Conference and a full biography of Dr Lawrence on the conference web pages at:-
