Projecting the Growth of Collections

Hi All, I am in a lucky position that my company is currently building a dedicated archive centre.

Can anyone recommend an expansion estimation calculation that I might be able to use to calculate future expansion needs? Is there one that exists?

I have approximate measurement of the current collection, but this is from the past 100 years or so.

Any suggestions, recommendations or readings would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

  • Look at your accessioning figures - how many items have you added each year over the last few years, then multiple that by the space those items need and double it - that has seemed to work for me so far.  If you use compactor shelving that will increase your storage shelf space by 2/3.  But remember when you get a new storage space larger items will come in suddenly.  Make sure your policies and heightened security are in place or others will see it as a place to store their excess.  Have fun, it is great when it is finished I can assure you.
